Games and Versions Street Fighter (1987) Ryu vs. Retsu in Street Fighter. Only two main playable characters, Ryu and Ken. There were a multitude of other opponents with names like Gen, Adon, Eagle, Sagat etc. Street Fighter II – The Series (1991-1995) This series featured improvements with each release, more opponents, more moves, more speed. There were four different versions in all ending with Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. Street Fighter II was actually the start of the phenomenon that this series became. The first game in the series was the very first fighting game that gave players options regarding different characters with different moves. The whole series came together in the Street Fighter Collection for the original Playstation and for the Sega Saturn 3 game console. Street Fighter Alpha series (1995–1998) This series included Ryu and Ken and many other returning characters. Guy, Charlie and Rose were just some of the new characters. Street Fighter Alpha 2 include new backdrops for the fights, new music and new endings. Some of the returning characters were hidden versions. Street Fighter Alpha 3 include 3 fighting styles you could chose from. Street Fighter EX series (1996–2001) This series was a spin off of the series and was done in 3D. Done with Arika, the cast included more original characters in addition to the old standard characters. Most of the games were ported to home game consoles as well. The EX3 game was made available for the Playstation 2. Street Fighter III series (1997–1999) The first video game, called Street Fighter III: The New Generation, in the series kept only Ryu and Ken from the previous games. The rest of the characters were tossed on the trash heap. Of the new characters, Alex was put in to be the new lead in the game. The last video game in the series added more new moves and new actors for the voices. The music and animation was changed as well. Vs. series (1996–2002, 2008) During the life of the Street Fighter video games, Capcom also licensed from other companies various characters to include in their games. Super Heroes and X-Men from Marvel were big sellers. Capcom also produced Street Fighter with characters from other fight game publishers, most notably SNK. Street Fighter IV (2008) Revealed at the Capcom Gamers Day event in London, Street Fighter IV was released. Eight years since the release of the last Street Fighter III video game. The original 12 warriors were brought back along with hidden character Akuma. Still essentially a 2D game, it included some 3D graphics as well. “Focus Attacks” (counter-attacking techniques) and “Ultra Combo” moves were introduced. A version for home game consoles was released in February 2009 for the PlayStatio 3 and the Xbox 360 and most recently a version for the Windows PC was released in July 2009. Street Fighter 3: The New Generation, made its break in 97, and was the first one to bring in so many new fighters at once, like alex, gill and kens apprentice sean. This one is lots of fun and my personal favorite. Chun Li was my favorite character to use. |
