Street Fighter – Characters and Gameplay In 1987 Street Fighter made is debut in the arcade fighting game genre. Takashi Nishiyama and Hiroshi Matsumoto were the designers.

The characters were many but the two primary characters were Ryu and Ken, opponents in the world wide martial arts tournament. Later games saw the introduction of characters including Birdie, Sagat, Mike, Joe etc. The list is a very long one. Early play was simple: you could punch or kick. Each option could be varied by speed as well as strength. Additionally, there were three special attacks that required special movements with the controls.

In the game, you battle your opponents in a series of matches against either a computer controlled character or against a second player. Each match takes a maximum of 30 seconds to complete.

Beginning with Street Fighter II, a player could fight with more 30 different moves including throws. No longer was it a simple punch and kick game. Additionally, each player had special moves that only they had. During a single player game, a second player could join in and take control of your opponent so would not always be fighting just against the machine.

As the game ‘grew’ older, more refinements were added: better graphics, faster play, stronger and more difficult attacks But the premise remained
