Street Fighter History

1987 - Supernova 1987A, the first "naked-eye" supernova since 1604, is observed. 1987 – Street Fighter was released by Capcom. Not the first of its genre but certainly groundbreaking in its use of graphics, characters and movement. Based on a scenario of a world wide tournament for the martial arts involving ten opponents and spanning five different countries. The two main combatants were Ryu and Ken. Ken could be controlled by a second player at any time during the fight. Before Street Fighter, a player could only walk across the screen and beat up all the weaker bad guys. After its release it was ported to the personal computer including the IBM PC and its clones. Not far behind was its release using the name Fighting Street on the NEC TurboGrafx-CD. But it wasn’t until 1997 that Street Fighter made its way to the Playstation as part of a Street Fighter bundle. Versions for the Xbox and Playstation 2 followed. Now there are versions of the game for mobile phones as well. One of the interesting developments in the Street Fighter series was the release of X-Men vs Street Fighter, under license from Marvel Comics, in 1996. And in 1997, Capcom released Marvel Super Heroes versus Street Fighter. Not contend with comic book characters, Capcom actually released a ‘Capcom vs SNK’ in 2000 using characters for both games. SNK was a rival fighting game maker. |
